More Ways to Help

Looking for other ways to give back? Here are some tips on how you can get involved:

Serve on a Committee

We believe partnering with women affected by breast cancer will help us better serve those coping with the disease. You can help by volunteering for a Consumer Advisory Committee (CAC).

As a CAC member, you will work alongside women affected by breast cancer to advise LBBC on our print and online resources. Communicating by telephone and e-mail, an LBBC staff member or partner will ask for your views about and experiences of breast cancer. You may be asked to review brochures, photographs, websites or other materials that we develop based on comments from the group. No special expertise or experience is necessary—just energy and a willingness to participate.

Previous topics on which we formed CACs include hormonal therapies, symptoms and treatment side effects of metastatic breast cancer, bone health, anxiety and depression and financial concerns.

To express interest in joining a CAC, send an e-mail to editor@lbbc.org with your name, age, city and state and year of diagnosis. Let us know what topics most interest you, and we’ll contact you when we form a committee to explore them.

Host a Fundraiser

In addition to Yoga on the Steps for Living Beyond Breast Cancer and the Butterfly Ball, LBBC is fortunate to be the beneficiary of over 20 third party events each year. A portion of proceeds from each event is donated to help support our programs and services. These events not only raise almost $100,000 annually, but they also bring awareness to our organization.

A third party event is organized and hosted by a person, group, organization or business other than LBBC. If you partner with us, depending on the size, location and type of the event, we can advertise and promote the event to our constituents. We also can provide staff, volunteers or speakers.

LBBC received a four-star “exceptional” rating from Charity Navigator for the 6th consecutive year in 2011, so our third-party partners can be assured that we will be good stewards of the money raised for us.

LBBC has been the beneficiary of a wide variety of events including athletic tournaments, shopping events and restaurant openings. Some of our partners have been with us since our early years. If you are interested in organizing a third party event and donating the proceeds to us, please take a look at our third party event guidelines. Please call (610) 645-4567 or email development@lbbc.org if you have additional questions.

Bring your unique talents and interests to LBBC! Here are some ideas to get you started:

Host a “cancerversary” party:

Every January around the anniversary of her cancer remission, Joy Rubeo of Trappe, Pennsylvania, gathers friends and family to “Celebrate Life.” From luaus to Mardi Gras to pajama parties, each year a new theme is designated and guests are encouraged to dress up.

“This has proven to be great fun!,” says Joy in a blog post.

Joy collects donations at the party for LBBC because “LBBC has been there every step of the way for us. I was diagnosed in my early 30s, and the Young Survivors’ Group was a true resource for me. Even today, the newsletters, conferences, Survivors’ Helpline and The Paula A. Seidman Library and Resource Center are priceless services, which I still consult.”

To date, Joy has raised over $35,000 for LBBC!

Fire up that oven and hold a bake sale:

Judy Herman and her husband, Jerry, began baking cakes out of their home in the hopes of raising a few hundred dollars for LBBC. Little did they know the idea would take off and they would be baking six days a week!

The Hermans wanted to do something to raise funds for LBBC in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Thirteen years ago, their daughter, Andi, fought the disease, but it came back seven years ago. Although Andi is now in remission, Judy still wanted to help so she turned her passion for baking into a fundraiser.

She began baking chocolate chip banana cakes and offering them for a minimum donation of $10 each. To date, Judy, Jerry and their “angel bakers” have baked over 400 cakes and raised more than $4000 for LBBC!

Have a passion for fashion? Host a shopping event:

Claire Dickson and daughter, Debbie, of Claire Dickson Boutique in Lafayette Hill, held An Evening with Meaning to benefit LBBC on March 16, 2010. It was fun-filled night of shopping with prizes, surprises, hors d’oeuvres and informal modeling. This exciting event raised over $4,000 for LBBC’s programs and services.
